Book Update & a New Series Set on Sale

Hi, All…

Today, I want to bring you up to date on the status of my cozy mystery, Tainted Truffles. It is through the next to the last edit and will be going to my editor for the final pass soon. My original release date was July 15th, but I’m setting the book back to August 15th. My schedule went off the rails at the end of May with family emergencies and an unplanned trip to Dallas, Texas.

Since I want the book to be the best it can be, it makes sense to delay the release until I achieve that. So new release date is August 15th. It will be worth the wait. I’ll include a little preview at the bottom of this post, but first, I’d like to tell you about a great book offer from an author friend.

Meet Karen Randau

Like me, a native of the southwestern United States, Karen got her  degree in journalism/public relations from The University of Texas at Austin. Karen joined an international relief and development organization to use her skills to help people struggling with extreme poverty. In this job, she did a lot of traveling and meeting people in difficult situations. With this background, she loves to write mysteries and thrillers. She is offering a box set of her romantic mystery trilogy for just $0.99

The Kayla Walsh Mysteries Box Set

Lies and secrets destroyed Kayla’s family. Her quest to find the truth could turn deadly.

After a savage attack at the hands of a masked murderer, Kayla Walsh’s life will never be the same. As if witness protection weren’t enough of a challenge, she needs constant support and struggles with day-to-day self-care.

Martin Daniels wants to keep the tragic results of his childhood as a foster kid buried. After he lands the job as Kayla’s physical therapist, her tenacity in overcoming serious injuries inspires him and captures his heart.

When they realize their lives crossed by design, they join forces to follow clues across the globe to find out why. Their agonizing discovery: They’re puppets in a sinister international plot.

I picked up this book set yesterday and dove into the first book. It’s a page turner and hard to put down. If I hadn’t been falling asleep, I would have kept reading. Tense, suspenseful, and enough intrigue to hook you right in. Pick up your copy for just 99-cents before this promotion ends on June 27th. Available now at Amazon.

Book Excerpt from Tainted Truffles

“I’m getting tired of this, Debra.”

The woman’s irate voice carried from the wings to the stage where Isla and Lydia knelt on the floor repairing a table leg. The named actress in the remark had accidentally broken it during the dramatic finale at the matinee performance.

Isla sat back and turned her eyes toward the stage-right wing where the pair of ladies stood. Still in costume and makeup, Debra carried a frilly dress over one arm as she turned to face her co-star.

“Give it back to me now, or I’ll report you.” Francine stuck her hand out as she made her demand.

Debra set her shoulders and fluffed her blonde curls as she stared at Francine like she’d made an extremely poor joke. “Don’t be ridiculous, Frannie; I wouldn’t bother with that little trinket. It’s not worth the effort.”

“It’s an emerald and worth almost five hundred dollars!”

Debra rolled her eyes. “I didn’t touch it.”

“Then what happened to it?” Francine’s hands fisted on her narrow hips as she glowered.

Isla shook her head. Another squabble between her diva actress and the slightly less dramatic co-star.

“Aren’t you going to say something before they come to blows?” Lydia asked, her eyes wide. As a recent theater volunteer, the girl hadn’t witnessed the two actresses quibbling before now.

“Those two are always at it. Some kind of natural rivalry, I guess.” Isla shook her head, turned her attention to the newly installed table leg, and dipped her paintbrush in the varnish. “They fight over everything.”

“I really don’t know.” Debra flounced as she resumed her progress toward Isla. She came to a stop in front of her and held the dress out. “Dear, would you mind sewing up this little tear?” She poked a finger through a three-inch rip near the knee.

Isla studied Debra’s pretty face for a moment or two. “Can’t Missy do that?” As wardrobe mistress, the task belonged to Melissa.

“I suppose. Except she had to leave after curtain and I don’t have a clue if she’ll be back in time for the evening show. It’s in the first act.”

Sighing, Isla waved her hand, the one without the paintbrush. “Fine. Put it on that chair. I’ll get it done.”

“What about my ring?” Francine demanded. She came up behind Debra and glared over her shoulder.

Debra turned her head. “You’ve obviously misplaced it. Go look for it.” She laid the dress down and cast a smile she reserved for her fans at Isla. “Thank you. You’re a treasure, dear.” With a smirk at Francine, she sauntered off the stage like the theater goddess she pretended to be.

“Really, your practical jokes have gone too far. This isn’t amusing.” Francine called after her before looking to Isla and flinging a hand toward Debra, as if asking for help. “She’s taken my emerald ring.” She strode over and planted herself in front of Isla. “What are you going to do about her?

Isla blinked and sat back on her legs, brushing her hair back. “What do you mean? Do you have any proof she took it?”

“Well…no. But it’s gone, and it had to be either Debra or Grace. I doubt the girl took it, since she didn’t even know it was there.”

“Look. I realize Debra’s a pain and pulls all those stupid jokes, but that doesn’t mean she’s a thief. I’m sure the ring will turn up.”

Francine stiffened, her body snapping back like Isla had struck her. “Well, thank you for no help at all. I’ll call the sheriff if it doesn’t turn up by tonight, then we’ll see how funny it is.” She pivoted, stomping away.

What did Francine expect her to do? Granted, she owned the theater and filled in on a dozen jobs, but she wasn’t responsible for everyone’s actions. Lydia cast a sympathetic glance at her as she turned back to the table and lifted her paintbrush.

The retreating footsteps halted, then Francine called back. “Oh… Your cat came in the dressing room. You’re aware I’m allergic.”

Isla looked up, mouth dropping open. Crap! “I’m sorry, Francine. I must have left the door upstairs open. I’ll check it, so it doesn’t happen again.”

Isla’s shoulders slumped. Higgins wasn’t the easiest cat to keep confined, but she tried to ensure he couldn’t get into the main theater during business hours. During the night, the Tuxedo feline roamed freely, often cleaning out any pests, like mice and bugs, that made their way inside.

Cat Whisperer is releasing soon!

March came and went and I didn’t make it back to post here. Such a busy month and April is almost as bad. I’m putting the final touches on Cat Whisperer and it will be releasing on April 15th. Excited for this new book and it’s been a joy working on it.

Here’s the cover for it, the one I had planned to reveal last month. Isn’t Hunter dreamy-looking and who’s that handsome fellow in the foreground? All will be revealed when you read the book.

Now, back to work so I can meet that publish date!

Gearing Up for the Coming Year

Is the weekend gone already? I had planned to get this out on Sunday, but here it is Monday… And the Winter Olympics are underway! Yes, I went down the rabbit hole all weekend! So here’s what else has been happening in the past two months.

New Cat in the House

In early December, I lost Jelickle, my 15-year-old black cat. She had developed a bowel condition that the vet couldn’t identify and she fought it for over a year. I suspect it was a form of cancer. The poor baby kept losing weight no matter how much she ate. On December 3rd, we called an end to her struggle and helped her to the Rainbow Bridge. She was a sweet loving feline and left a big hole in my heart.

While I usually wait a year or so to get another pet, I found the need to add a new cat to the household. I checked my local Humane Society website for potential cats and picked out one, but he was adopted before I could get there. Then a six-month old female kitten showed up and I connected with her immediately. I brought her home the next day and named her Vala, which means Chosen in Welsh. Or she could be that character on “Stargate.”

She is a calico girl with bunny-soft fur, a tiny meow, and a huge purr. She also seems to have the ragdoll trait of going limp when you pick her up. She was considered a feral kitty as her mama was a barn cat, so she has one clipped ear. But she’s a sweetheart, although I have a feeling she’s going to be a big girl.

As to getting along with my other two cats, it’s coming along. Emma is a short-haired calico and at nine isn’t too keen on having a youngster chasing her. My old man,seventeen-year-old Timmy tries his best to ignore her. He doesn’t have the patience for any shananigans.

We’ll see how it goes after a few more months.

Writing Status

One effect of cats who love attention is they want to be in your lap ALL the time. In turn, that cripples your writing time. I’m actually holding my keyboard over Timmy’s head and typing with one hand to write this. Despite the challenges, I am making headway on a new suspense romance book, so read on.

Cat Whisperer

He’s got a whopper of a secret that he’s kept from the whole town, but he’s much smarter than people think. Still, his parents’ bad reputation isn’t helping his case.

She’s training to be a veterinarian and is working with the local pet doc during the summer.

When she gives him a lift into town, her curiosity is piqued. He finds her attractive, but considers her off limits when he realizes who she is. Will the tiny spark between them grow to a flame or will his past block their future?

I just finished a semi-final edit on this exciting novel, and I’m sending it to beta readers now. My planned release date is April 15,2022. Want to be a beta reader? Contact me at RionaKelly.author@gmail.com

Here’s a partial cover reveal to tease you a bit. Look for the full reveal in March.

Cat Whisperer will be releasing on April 15, 2022. Full cover reveal coming next month.

Next Up is a Cozy

So, what am I working on now? Tainted Truffles, my first book of what I plan to be a series of cozy mysteries, is up. Book one is written, and I’m starting the first edits on it. With book two about one-third done, I will be writing more on it over the next three months.

Here’s a introduction to my lead character .

Isla Frost is bright, talented, and the owner of a performance theatre she inherited from her great aunt, a once-famous actress. As the focal point for her small California town, the theater is a social hub, so Isla knows practically everyone. And, oh yeah, she’s a magnet for trouble.

Romance Anthology Exclusive to Amazon

And the last thing I have to cover is the romance anthology, Love Yesterday, Today, and Forever, which was released in November. I have a novelette in this collection that may turn into a series of novellas under the banner of Modern Muses. In fact, you’ll find a link in the book for a download of another short story for the series.

We’ve gone exclusive with Amazon until the book leaves the market at the end of June. From now until February 15th, the e-book is only $0.99 to get eight novelettes by seven authors. The main credited author is GL Robinson. We also have stories by Cathryn Petit and Beth Fuller. And, if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free there. Check it out.

Book launched! Sort of…

Hi, friends…

Love Yesterday, Today, and Forever has been launched and is on Amazon, Apple, Kobo, and Barnes and Noble. BUT, there is a glitch. While the book was scheduled to be FREE from Dec. 1 to Dec. 5, it hasn’t quite made it on Amazon. The request is in for them to set the price to free for these days, but so far, they haven’t done it. This is up to Amazon’s discretion so all I can do now is wait and hope they will get it done soon.

In the meantime, if you can download on Apple, Kobo or B&N, it is ready to go now. The links are here:

Here’s a little teaser from the story Magnolia Sweets by Catheryn Petit:

March 1

Mariclaire

She charged the pier, white knuckles clutching the wobbly wheeled suitcase whizzing behind her. Designer heels clapped the weather-warped boards. Not that she could afford designer heels now or a suitcase with squared-up wheels. They represented the remains of a fool-hearted woman with her feet planted in a dream life—a perceived life full of abundance and love, not a life where husbands shoved documents in front of their wives to sign, documents that granted control over all finances, and certainly not a life where big-eyed, ruby-lipped personal assistants snuck past doorways raising the “personal” in their title to a major-league level.

With a brick of dread wedged in the middle of her chest, Mariclaire raced toward her destination.

“Wait. Wait for me.”

A warm breeze brushed her cheeks, caught the edge of her pale blue floppy hat, and set it sailing. She pressed on.

“Where’s the fire?”

Mariclaire halted, turning to see a man whose ramshackled body and time-chiseled face made him look like a fixture of this pier, like a statue or a tribute to all the men of the sea. He stood wielding her runaway hat.

“Keep it. I need to get on that ferry before it pulls out.” She pointed to the freshly painted two-story paddler in its fiery reds and bright whites showing like a riverboat from Old Hollywood.

“Yep, ain’t she a beaut? I’m her captain.”

“Then, I’m not too late?”

“Too late?”

“To board.”

“No ma’am. I’d say you’re about a month too early.”

“What! My agent said…grr…just wait until I get…” Mariclaire rummaged through her purse, fishing for her cell phone.

“You that writer?”

“Mariclaire Ross,” she answered, distracted by her search. “I’m subjected—I mean, scheduled for a stay on an island. I’m sup—”

“Know all about it. Magnolia Isle. You’re on here with me. Soon as we’re done loading the cargo.”

“The what?”

The man used a sun-beaten hand to spotlight the boat docked next to him where two bare-chested men, with enough bronze to have stepped off of one of her romance covers, packed boxes onto the service-looking vessel.

“That? I’m not riding in that.”

“Suit yourself.”

“Isn’t there another way out there?”

“Nope. Not till next month. That’s when the action starts.” His outstretched arm offered her stray hat.

That’s it for today! When the Amazon copy is up for free, I’ll add a new note!
